this is why i love skyping my sister. she is beautiful. and her kids are adorable. what could be better than spider-man showing off his muscles in celebration of  trick-or-treating tomorrow? and lovely Jannessa...with her trademark smile and leopard helmet.
so just pretend that the pictures aren't blurry.
but its alright that they are. because that's how life goes. it gets messy. life isn't always sure and clean cut, as much as i wish it was.
so thanks for reminding me of where i'm from and what i want. and that its ok to not have it all figured out. what else is family for?

i hate to spoil the ending, but everything is going to be fine.

nothing like a rainy day and hot cocoa to make you feel sappy

this is what happened today.
Bronte was sick. so was i. it was rainy. see why this happend?
we thought it was a good excuse.
and one thing led to another...so soon walking down college ave was photography session.
this is what we found. in case you were wondering what is written on the window, it says "i still love you darlin! have a great day!" imagine our shock and delight when the door opened. and someone lived there. and we snatched this shot of a blurry bike in the stairwell. and got a little peek into the life of some adorable couple that lives right here in Rexburg...perhaps smudged around the edges but adorable none the less.
further imagine our delight when this is what the streets look like! in our very own town! welcome back. and the trees tried real hard to look as beautiful as they did in Utah. good form, Rexburg. i mean, that yellow! the puddles! they were even giving me lovely reflection shots! good day.
the whole day ended with a night of watching the debate and eating caramel apples turned into midnight madness at 7:00. don't you love these darling girls? i sure do.
because sometimes you just need one day of ignoring homework and soaking up some calm air that smells of rain. and let life just run right by for a day. then you pick yourself back up and start running with it tomorrow.

things i've been lovin' lately

farmer's market. because obviously. that peach-raspberry tart was absolutely divine. heaven in my mouth. and they were so pretty. plus, do you see those rows of homemade fudge? so did we. and we bought two squares. and dips and fruits. Bront calls it "farmer's market YOLO." even though i kinda hate that saying, i kinda love her for saying it. because who knows when you're going to snag deliciousness like that in a college town?

also this. it was at the market. and don't worry, it was rainbow perfection.

ok. second off, what is with the elevators here? i know i said i try to avoid them...but! things are just getting to be all sorts of fun!

see what i mean? yep.

also, scarves and colored skinnies and silky shirts and days that you don't have to wear a jacket because Rexburg decides not to be freezing. nuff said.

ps...and Hall and Oates. because this song makes my day. everyday. especially the fact that i can listen to it about 73 times and still love it. and never get over their hair.

real words

late at night, everything gets really funny. like telling stories about trying to teach grandpa's how to use the internet...and they open a word document. and we start saying funky words that aren't really real words. and getting called out on it.
exhibit a:
"do you want some cereal, Bront?"
"nope. i've got tuna casserole."
"well...i have a whole nother box if you want some."
nother? is that a word? Kendall and i didn't even notice, but Bronte sure did.
exhibit b:
"my teacher says 'ruther' instead of 'whether"...
ruther you have a whole nother box of cereal or not...

pretty sure i had a six pack by the end of last night.

ps...if this post makes me seem a little crazy, and isn't funny at all...then i guess you had to be there. because it was hilarious.

Comm 150 has me thinking

“Are you sure you want to decline your acceptance to Brigham Young University Provo?”
Yes. And no. Maybe. I’m probably more unsure about this than I have been about anything in a while. Because guess what? I was a senior in high school. I knew where I was, I had my girlfriends by my side, my parents…I belonged somewhere. The swaying fields and fresh cut alfalfa, the little red swing atop a gritty sand pile, the theater stage hot with lights, the winding roads of the Divide and my little tank, the heater and blanket and late night talks with momma. They owned me. Heart and soul.  How was I supposed to be sure about jumping from the one thing that was going to be constant? I was going to grow up, attend BYU, and then go to Law School. Live in New York.
Not Idaho. And yet, that is exactly was I was going to do. Because the little essay I was writing called “the simple, beautiful, finding myself years at Weber” was coming to a close. It had reached its 3,000 words and it was time to turn it in.
That’s what I feel like my life is like. A few well written essays, some photojournalism, and a short story or two. And a lot of ramblings. It’s like little chapters of a novel that is still being written. How did I get here? What now? Where am I going? Sometimes I wonder that too. Especially the “where am I going” bit.
Chapter one: a perfectly on-time baby is born 30 minutes after her mother’s arrival at hospital. She gurgles and laughs and her sisters put headbands on her bald head. Colorado is good to her.
Chapter two: a bare-foot childhood is spent running around a storybook neighborhood, chasing the mailman and jumping on trampolines. She’s pretty confident. And precocious. Most of the time she just doesn’t care if the man fixing the lights in the basement wants to hear her stories or not.
Chapter three: Huntsville. Paved roads gave way to dirt fields. The little girl danced and swung until she grew up. She loved that family that she called her own. And they went adventuring almost every day.
Chapter four: that one time when she went to junior high. Because that time was hard. And somehow, no matter how high the swings took her, she could never get back the beautiful, bright-eyed child she was. She was plain and awkward and self-conscious. No fun.
Chapter five: her feet found the stage and her voice found a song. And the stage and the song found her friends. Good ones. Gorgeous girls full of life and love and happiness. And they loved her, for just being her. And she slowly gave herself permission to be her again. The bright-eyed child. Because they said it was ok. And she danced. It was an exquisite and charming little time.
Chapter six: college came. And somehow, between classes and working and living she became herself. Little things she had wanted and worked on, people were suddenly complimenting her on! This was fabulous. And she had her first boyfriend. What? Guys asked her on dates? Yep. She loved life and it loved her right back.
Chapter seven: passing buckets full of mud and water, she found a part of herself she never knew. Her soul soaked up the joy, love, vibrancy and hope from those who were rich with poverty. She has to reclaim that part of herself often…the being under the Kenyan sun and breathing warm air and thinking new thoughts and loving people who were suddenly no longer strangers part. Because sometimes it gets lost or forgotten.
Chapter 8: although she has some big plans for this part, it hasn’t actually happened yet. So she keeps dreaming with her eyes wide open. Ready.
So I guess that's where I can from. Kinda. And as I sit here in my forth-floor apartment, I'm grateful for it. Because yeah, I might be a little crazy. and temperamental. and probably annoying. But I'm optimistic. and driven. and hopeful for the future. And that's enough.

a day for walking in the park. and also feeding the ducks.

i bought a summer dress. from anthropology. but good news! it was actually at downeast, making it like 75% off. good, right? and i feel all 50's housewife in it. so naturally, i wore it to the park. and fed ducks. but mostly just felt very blessed and grateful.
i still have this pretty picture i painted in my head of being young and sophisticated and living in the city...Boston or New York. and in that pretty picture, my weekends are filled with Broadway plays and trips to the park in heels and hipster maxi skirts and my canon. and i scout out the city with nothing to do but search for little hole-in-the-wall restaurants and scour vintage stores. thanks Natalie and Sydney for the inspiration. and maybe i will get there. after all, they did both live in Idaho at one point. but maybe not. either way, i am more than a little excited to see where life takes me.
because "not all those who wander are lost." (j.r.r. tolkien) and sometimes i like to wander.
